About the view

Sarakiniko Beach Lunar Cove

The view looks out from the heart of Sarakiniko Beach, where pale, smoothly curved formations wrap around a still teal pool, channeling it toward the open Aegean beyond. It is a sunset perspective — the sun rests just above the horizon on the left, a warm gold disc dissolving into a sky layered with peach, blush and the softest lilac. Those colors wash back down across the white formations, turning their shadowed hollows faintly lavender and their ridges a warm rose-gold. A distant island silhouette sits low on the right horizon, barely darker than the water. The composition draws the eye from the deep teal of the foreground pool along a narrow channel outward into that luminous, hazy distance.

The history & when to go

Sarakiniko's extraordinary landscape was shaped over millennia by volcanic activity and the relentless action of wind and sea on Milos. The formations are the result of ancient volcanic ash and lava compressed and eroded into the rounded, pale shapes visitors find so striking today. The site sits on the northern coast of Milos, away from the main settlements, and has been a point of fascination for travelers to the Cyclades for generations.

The low light of early morning and late afternoon catches every curve and hollow, making both sunrise and sunset rewarding hours to visit.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Milos finds a home on your wall.
