About the view

Sea Lions Milford Sound Rocks

Three fur seals lie draped across a broad, pale ledge at the waterline in Milford Sound, their warm chestnut bodies utterly relaxed against the cool grey of the rock. The view is close and unhurried, as though you are drifting past on a slow boat, close enough to hear them breathe. Patches of bright green moss streak the ledge where water has touched it, and beyond the animals the fiord opens into deep teal, flanked by cliff faces thick with dark forest. A slice of sheer, blue-shadowed wall rises in the upper right corner, anchoring the whole scene in the vast scale of the place.

The history & when to go

Milford Sound sits within Fiordland National Park, part of a UNESCO World Heritage area recognized for its extraordinary natural values. The fiord stretches roughly fifteen kilometers from the head of the valley to the Tasman Sea and receives some of the highest rainfall of any inhabited place on earth, which feeds its many seasonal waterfalls and keeps the surrounding forest dense year-round. Fur seals are a permanent presence here, hauling out on rocky outcrops to rest between fishing, entirely at ease in one of the world's most dramatic landscapes.

Cruising the fiord in the early morning, before the midday light flattens the colours, gives the best chance of catching moments exactly like this one.

Three New Zealand fur seals sprawl across sun-warmed granite at the edge of the world, the dark fiord water glittering just below. This watercolor print of Milford Sound renders their drowsy stillness in warm amber and cool stone grey beneath emerald cliffs.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Milford Sound finds a home on your wall.
