About the view

Chasm Stream Rocky Gorge

A pale blue-white torrent rushes toward you through the Chasm Stream gorge, the view drawn from just above river level as though you are crouched at the water's edge. The channel narrows between heavy, moss-draped boulders whose surfaces have been worn into deep, spiral hollows — smooth coils that look almost deliberate, turned by the river over an immense span of time. Fronds and leafy growth crowd both banks in layers of chartreuse, olive and gold, lit from above by a diffuse canopy light that makes the whole scene glow. The water itself shifts from churning white foam to a calm, dark teal where it pools in the shadows, and the contrast between that stillness and the rushing current gives the composition a quiet, held-breath energy.

The history & when to go

Fiordland National Park, where this gorge sits, is part of Te Wahipounamu — the South West New Zealand World Heritage Area, recognized for its outstanding natural landscape and ecological value. The Chasm is formed by the Cleddau River, which drops through a series of narrow slots in the gorge, and the sculpted potholes visible here are the result of thousands of years of fast-moving water carrying debris in tight circular paths against the riverbed.

The gorge is most dramatic after heavy rainfall, when the river runs full and the surrounding forest deepens to an almost electric green.

At the Chasm in Milford Sound, glacial water has carved smooth spiraling bowls into pale stone, rushing white and cold through a cathedral of ferns. This watercolor print of the Chasm captures those swirling rock formations in cool silver and luminous moss green, with a hushed, ancient mood.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Milford Sound finds a home on your wall.
