About the view

Ocean Drive Art Deco Strip

Ocean Drive glows at the edge of sunset, viewed from street level looking south along the famous strip in Miami Beach. The sky dissolves into layered bands of violet, rose, and amber, and their warmth spills down onto a wet road that mirrors the colors back in long, honeyed ribbons. Tall palms lean gently to the left, their fronds catching the last orange fire from the horizon, while a row of curved, low-rise facades steps back along the right — each one washed in mint, coral, and soft cream, with neon-lit canopies already glowing against the dusk. A single vintage car drifts through the middle of the frame, its turquoise body catching the wet light, grounding the whole dreamy scene in something wonderfully real.

The history & when to go

Ocean Drive forms the eastern edge of the Miami Beach Architectural District, a stretch listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The buildings lining it were constructed largely during the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, representing one of the most concentrated collections of Art Deco architecture in the world. Preservation efforts beginning in the 1970s and 1980s saved the district from demolition, and today it draws visitors, architects, and filmmakers from around the globe.

Early morning and the last half-hour before sunset offer the softest, most saturated light along this stretch, when the facades seem to absorb color from the sky rather than simply reflect it.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Miami finds a home on your wall.
