Cape Florida Lighthouse Beach
A sandy path curves through tall, wind-bent grasses toward the Cape Florida Lighthouse, its slender white tower rising cleanly against a wide expanse of vivid blue sky. Seen from ground level along the shoreline path, the composition draws the eye forward past the warm-toned keeper's cottage with its terracotta roof, past a cluster of tall palms, and out to the left where the Atlantic rolls in waves of turquoise and seafoam green. Soft pink clouds drift at the horizon, and the afternoon light catches the pale sand and glassy shallows in long golden tones that make the whole scene feel suspended in a perfect Florida hour.
The history & when to go
The Cape Florida Lighthouse was completed in 1825, making it the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County. It has survived considerable history, including serious damage during the Second Seminole War in 1836, when it was attacked and badly burned. A taller replacement tower was completed in 1847, and the lighthouse guided mariners through the treacherous reef-lined waters off Key Biscayne until it was decommissioned in 1878. Restored and relit in the 1990s, it now stands within Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and remains one of the most historically significant landmarks along Florida's southeastern coast.
Late afternoon on a clear winter day offers the warmest light and the calmest seas, when the low sun turns the shallows a brilliant green and the tower glows almost white against the sky.
