About the view

Saone River Saint Georges Church

The view looks across the Saône River at dusk, the water stretched wide and glassy across the lower half of the composition. Lyon's Vieux Lyon quarter lines the far bank, its warm facades — blush, terracotta, cream — stacked against a wooded hillside rising into a deep cobalt sky. At the center of it all, the slender spire of Saint Georges Church reaches upward, the building lit from below in soft amber and gold that spills down to the quay. Bridge arches to the left catch the glow of street lamps, and their reflections ripple alongside streaks of pink and orange light across the river's blue surface. The whole scene sits in that suspended twilight moment when the sky and the water seem to share the same color.

The history & when to go

Saint Georges Church stands in the heart of Vieux Lyon, the city's medieval and Renaissance quarter, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church was built in the nineteenth century in a neo-Gothic style, designed by the architect Pierre Bossan, who also worked on the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Its location directly on the Saône riverbank has made it one of the most recognizable landmarks of this historic district.

The blue hour — those twenty minutes just after sunset — is when this particular view comes fully alive, and the warmer months give the longest window to catch it.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Lyon finds a home on your wall.
