Fourviere Hill Basilica Saone
The view looks across the Saône toward the long, colorful terrace of buildings that lines Lyon's right bank — a tight procession of warm ochre, dusty rose, soft cream, and brick red facades rising four and five stories, their shuttered windows catching full midday light. Behind and above them, a dense green hillside climbs steeply, and from its crest the white towers and rounded forms of the Fourvière Basilica rise against a broad blue sky streaked with loose summer cloud. The composition pulls the eye in layers: river light at the base, vivid facades in the middle, deep green slopes behind, and that luminous white silhouette crowning everything.
The history & when to go
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière was built in the second half of the nineteenth century, completed in 1896, following a vow made by Lyon's citizens during the Franco-Prussian War. It stands on a hill that has been a place of worship and civic significance since the Roman period, and it remains the spiritual symbol of the city. Its hilltop position means it is visible from much of Lyon, and it looks back across the rooftops and both rivers with equal authority.
The terrace of facades facing the Saône catches its warmest and most saturated color in the late afternoon, when the sun falls directly on the western-facing frontages.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Lyon finds a home on your wall.
