About the view

Old Fort Lamu Courtyard

The scene opens from the shade of a broad, ancient tree whose dark, spreading canopy frames the upper corners of the composition, drawing the eye down into the sunlit courtyard of the Old Fort in Lamu Town. Late golden light rakes across the warm stone walls, picking out the scalloped battlements and the row of arched doorways below them in deep amber and ochre. Long shadows stretch across the sandy ground, giving the space a stillness that feels both vast and intimate. A low tiled-roof structure sits to the left, its dark doorways cool against the blaze of afternoon. The sky behind the crenellated towers is a clear, pale blue — the whole palette running from burnt honey to dusty cream to soft shadow.

The history & when to go

The Old Fort is one of the most significant historic structures on the East African coast. It was built in the early nineteenth century, after Lamu allied with Oman against a rival power, and the Omani influence is evident in its defensive design. For much of its later history the building served a variety of civic purposes, and it has since been restored as a cultural center and open space for the community. The fort and the wider Lamu Old Town together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for the exceptional continuity of Swahili architecture and urban life they represent.

The courtyard catches its warmest light in the hour before sunset, when the low angle turns every wall into gold.
