About the view

Lamu Old Town Waterfront

The view opens from the water, looking along Lamu Old Town's harbourfront in the warm, golden wash of low afternoon light. Traditional wooden vessels crowd the right foreground, their hulls a deep honey-brown, rust-coloured canvas furled loosely across their spars, their prows angled toward the viewer as though just returned from the channel. Behind them, the waterfront stretches into the middle distance — a long, sun-bleached terrace of arched colonnades, tiered balconies, and warm-stone facades rising in quiet layers beneath a clear coastal sky. Tall palms push up between the buildings, their fronds catching the same golden light that gilds the rippling teal water below. A few soft clouds drift low on the left, and the whole scene holds that particular stillness that belongs to places where the sea does most of the talking.

The history & when to go

Lamu Old Town has been a centre of Swahili culture and Indian Ocean trade for over seven hundred years. Its waterfront has served as a landing point for merchants, pilgrims, and seafarers moving between the East African coast, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Indian subcontinent. The town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, recognised for its intact urban fabric and the living traditions that have shaped it across generations.

The light along this waterfront is at its richest in the hour before sunset, when the facades glow amber and the dhows cast long shadows across the harbour.

Bring Lamu's Timeless Calm Home – Lamu Old Town Waterfront Lamu Town · Gallery Canvas

Ancient coral-stone buildings line the Lamu Old Town waterfront as wooden dhows rest on water the color of shallow jade, their red sails folded under a cloudless sky. This watercolor print of Lamu Town renders that storied harbor in warm honey gold and soft cerulean, hushed and luminous.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Lamu Town finds a home on your wall.
