About the view

Lagos Cable-Stayed Bridge Sunset

The view is taken from the water's edge, looking straight into the heart of a Lagos sunset. The tall central pylon of the cable-stayed bridge rises as a dark silhouette against a sky that has dissolved entirely into amber and burnt orange, every shade deepened by the last minutes of direct light. The sun sits precisely between the two arching legs of the base, a small white disc ringed by a corona of gold, as though the bridge has been designed to frame it. Cables fan outward from the pylon's peak in long, even lines, their geometry softened against that glowing sky. Below, the lagoon mirrors the whole scene in warm copper tones, the reflection of the bridge trembling slightly on the surface.

The history & when to go

The Lagos Cable-Stayed Bridge is one of the major crossings in the city, linking the island districts that form the commercial heart of the city. Cable-stayed bridges of this design — where cables run directly from a central tower to the deck — became a favored form in late twentieth and early twenty-first century infrastructure across the world, combining structural efficiency with a striking visual presence. In Lagos, the bridge has become a recognizable part of the city's evolving skyline and a symbol of its ambition.

The view shown here is at its most dramatic in the dry season months, when harmattan haze thins and sunsets blaze most intensely across the lagoon.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Lagos finds a home on your wall.
