About the view

Kigali Hillside City View

The view opens from a lush hilltop looking across one of Kigali's rolling ridges, broad-leafed plants filling the foreground in deep, saturated greens before giving way to a cascade of terracotta rooftops tumbling down the slope. The warm earth tones of those roofs — vivid and sun-kissed — pulse against the verdant canopy surrounding them. In the middle distance, hill folds into hill in layered shades of rust and olive, and far beyond, the city's modest skyline floats in a soft haze of pale blue and lilac, barely distinguishable from the morning sky. It is a composition of extraordinary depth, intimate up close and vast at the horizon.

The history & when to go

Kigali became Rwanda's capital at independence in 1962 and has since grown into one of Africa's most discussed cities — recognized internationally for its cleanliness, safety, and the remarkable pace of its transformation following the devastating genocide of 1994. That recovery has been deliberate and community-driven, guided by national policies emphasizing reconciliation, urban planning, and environmental stewardship. The city's ban on plastic bags, introduced in 2008, became a symbol of its broader commitment to a different kind of future. Today Kigali is regularly cited among the continent's most livable and forward-looking capitals.

The dry seasons, running roughly June through September and December through February, offer the clearest skies and the most luminous views across the valleys.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kigali finds a home on your wall.
