About the view

Chinese Fishing Nets Sunset

The scene opens at the edge of the water, looking out across a still, wide backwater as the sun sinks low over the horizon. The famous Chinese fishing nets of Kochi rise in silhouette against a sky that has dissolved into layers of deep coral, soft rose, and pale violet. Their elegant tangle of long poles and suspended netting fans outward like an open hand, reflected in the glassy surface below where the pinks and oranges pool and ripple. A lone boat drifts quietly to the left of center, its small dark shape barely disturbing the water. Dense green foliage crowds the right-hand shore, and a scattering of aquatic plants floats at the waterline, their cool green a gentle counterpoint to all that warm, burning sky.

The history & when to go

The Chinese fishing nets are among the most recognized sights along the southwestern coast of India. Believed to have been introduced to the Kochi region through trade connections with China centuries ago, they are large counterbalanced structures operated from the shore, lowered into the water and raised by teams of fishermen using a system of ropes and heavy stones. Each net requires several people to work, and communities along the waterfront have maintained this method across many generations.

The richest light falls in the hour before and after sunset, when the sky shifts quickly through its full range of color and the water mirrors everything above it.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kerala Backwaters finds a home on your wall.
