About the view

Gergeti Trinity Church

Gergeti Trinity Church crowns a steep green hill in Kazbegi with the kind of quiet authority that stops you mid-step. The view looks up from the valley floor, where a pale winding path climbs the hillside and leads the eye straight to the warm-toned church and its companion tower perched at the summit. Two conical rooftops rise against an enormous wall of snow-streaked peaks, the deep cobalt and white of the mountains filling nearly the entire upper half of the composition. The vivid emerald of the hill glows in full summer light, throwing the earthy reds and browns of the church into sharp, almost luminous relief. It is a scene of startling contrast — lush and ancient, intimate and immense all at once.

The history & when to go

Gergeti Trinity Church was built in the fourteenth century and belongs to the Georgian Orthodox Church. Sitting at roughly 2,170 metres above sea level, it served for centuries as a place of refuge and safekeeping, and important religious relics were carried here for protection during times of invasion. The church remains an active place of worship today and is considered one of the most recognisable symbols of Georgia.

Late spring and early summer bring the hillside to its deepest green, with the high peaks still carrying their snow — exactly the scene captured here.

Perched on a steep green hill at 2170 metres, Gergeti Trinity Church rises against the snow-draped Caucasus like a sentinel carved from amber stone. This watercolor study of the Kazbegi landmark glows with rich terracotta, lush emerald, and cool glacial blue in a hushed, reverent mood.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kazbegi finds a home on your wall.
