About the view

Seal Bay Sea Lions

Three sea lions rest on a dark, wet stretch of sand at Seal Bay, their warm amber and tawny forms reflected in the shallow film of water at their feet. Two larger animals flank a smaller one between them, all three turned loosely toward the viewer with an expression of absolute calm. Behind them, gentle waves curl in ribbons of aqua and pale white, and the far end of the bay curves away into low, grass-covered headlands streaked with gold and deep green. The light reads as bright but soft — midday brilliance filtered into something approachable — leaving the trio's coats glowing with rich honey and copper tones against the cooler blues of the shore.

The history & when to go

Seal Bay Conservation Park is one of the few places in the world where a wild sea lion colony can be observed at close range on a guided beach tour. Australian sea lions are found only in Australia and are among the rarest sea lion species on earth. The Seal Bay colony is the third largest accessible colony, and the beach has been a protected site since 1954, managed today by the South Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service. These animals haul out between foraging trips, sometimes resting for days, and the beach serves as both nursery and gathering place across generations.

Visiting in the morning or late afternoon rewards you with the warmest light and the greatest number of animals ashore.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kangaroo Island finds a home on your wall.
