About the view

Pennington Bay Coastline

The view opens from high above the headland, looking down and across the full sweep of Pennington Bay on Kangaroo Island. Warm, sun-bleached rock faces crowd the right side of the composition, their amber and ochre tones contrasting sharply with the dense green scrub clinging to every ledge and fold. Below, the bay curves in a wide, generous arc — pale sand edged with frothing white wash, the water shifting from deep sapphire at the open horizon through every shade of turquoise and aqua as it shallows toward the shore. The light feels high and southern-hemisphere bright, flattening shadows and intensifying color until the sea seems almost luminous.

The history & when to go

Pennington Bay faces directly into the Southern Ocean, which gives it powerful surf on Kangaroo Island's south coast. The island itself was one of the first places in South Australia to be formally charted by European navigators in the early nineteenth century, and much of its coastline has remained largely undeveloped since. Pennington Bay sits within a stretch of coast valued for its ecological significance alongside its dramatic scenery, and the surrounding land has been subject to ongoing conservation efforts for decades.

The view from the clifftops above the bay is most vivid on clear mornings, when the low-angle light catches the water at its most intensely colored.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kangaroo Island finds a home on your wall.
