About the view

Jellybean Row Colourful Houses

A steep residential street slopes down toward the harbour in this view of Jellybean Row, the scene framed by tall rowhouses that press close on both sides like a corridor of pure colour. Crimson, goldenrod, teal, violet, and tangerine facades catch the full strength of a clear midday sun, their white-trimmed windows glowing against an electric blue sky. The perspective pulls the eye downhill along the narrow road, past patches of green and a scattering of stoops, until the water opens up at the bottom — a cool sliver of harbour blue meeting distant hills. The light is sharp and generous, making every hue feel almost luminous.

The history & when to go

Jellybean Row is the collective name for the clusters of brightly coloured wooden rowhouses found throughout St. John's, with some of the most photographed stretches located on Gower Street and the surrounding hillside blocks. The houses themselves date largely from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many built to replace structures lost in the Great Fire of 1892. Designated heritage properties today, they are actively maintained as a protected part of the city's architectural character.

Summer and early autumn bring the clearest Atlantic light, when the harbour shimmers at the foot of the hill and the colours read at their most saturated against a cloudless sky.
