About the view

Cape St. Mary's Lighthouse Cliffs

The view is from high on the headland, looking out across churning Atlantic water toward the edge of the cliff where the Cape St. Mary's Lighthouse stands sentinel against an enormous sunset sky. The tower rises in bold red and white bands, its lamp already glowing, silhouetted against a horizon dissolving from deep amber to vivid coral and rose. The upper sky opens into soft violet and pink, streaked with thin clouds catching the last fire of the day. Below, the surf rolls and breaks against dark cliff faces, the water swirling in layered blues and lavender-white, mirroring the fading warmth overhead. The whole composition pulls the eye from the turbulent foreground all the way to that solitary tower perched at the rim of the world.

Cape St. Mary's is one of the most remote points on the Avalon Peninsula, a stretch of coast that has guided — and at times claimed — vessels crossing the North Atlantic for centuries. The lighthouse itself has long served as a critical aid to navigation along this treacherous shoreline. The surrounding ecological reserve is also one of the most accessible seabird colonies in North America, drawing visitors from around the world to its dramatic cliffs.
