About the view

Xung Khiem Pavilion Lotus Pond

Seen from the edge of a covered walkway, Xung Khiem Pavilion rises above a wide lotus pond in Hue, its sweeping terracotta rooflines layered against a canopy of deep, shadowy green. The pavilion stands on slender stilts, their reflections broken by the dense carpet of round green leaves that covers nearly every inch of the water below. Soft pink blooms push up through the foliage here and there, catching what diffused light filters through the overcast sky. The palette is lush and hushed — burnt umber, forest green, dusty rose, and the still blue-grey of water glimpsed between the leaves. A second covered terrace edges into the left of the frame, its dark lacquered rails anchoring the composition and drawing the eye inward toward the main structure.

The history & when to go

Xung Khiem Pavilion was built in the 1860s within the tomb complex of Emperor Tu Duc, the longest-reigning emperor of the Nguyen dynasty. Tu Duc used the pavilion as a place for reading, composing poetry, and fishing from the water's edge. The complex as a whole took years to complete and reflects the emperor's deep involvement in its design. The lotus pond was a deliberate feature, central to the mood of retreat and contemplation that Tu Duc sought in this private sanctuary.

Late spring and early summer bring the lotus flowers to full bloom, making that season the most rewarding time to stand where this view was captured.
