About the view

Thien Mu Pagoda Hue

The scene opens from the water, looking across the jade-green Perfume River toward Thien Mu Pagoda rising in Hue's soft afternoon light. Seven octagonal tiers climb in warm terracotta tones, each level stepping back from the last until the spire meets a pale blue sky streaked with drifting cloud. Flanking the tower on both sides, tall trees blaze in deep amber and burnt orange, their canopies glowing as though lit from within. Wide stone stairways descend through layered green terracing toward the riverbank, where a long wooden dragon boat sits moored in the foreground, its dark hull grounding the composition against the shimmering water below.

The history & when to go

Thien Mu Pagoda was established in 1601 and has long been one of the most important Buddhist sites in Vietnam. The seven-story tower, called Phuoc Duyen, was added in the nineteenth century during the reign of Emperor Thieu Tri and has since become an emblem of Hue itself. The complex sits on a hillside along the northern bank of the Perfume River and remains an active place of worship, home to resident monks and centuries of religious tradition. It is also closely associated with pivotal moments in twentieth-century Vietnamese history.

The view from the river is especially vivid in late afternoon, when the low sun warms the tower's upper tiers and the surrounding canopy seems almost to glow.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Hue finds a home on your wall.
