About the view

Tian Tan Buddha Lantau

A vast seated figure rises against the pale blue sky above Lantau Island, one hand lifted in a gesture of blessing, the other resting open in its lap. Morning mist coils through the dense green canopy below, softening the long staircase that climbs toward the Tian Tan Buddha and dissolving the middle distance into layers of grey and sage. A broad peak looms behind the figure, its slopes fading from deep forest green into cool blue haze where cloud meets ridge. The statue itself carries a deep, cool tone — almost blue-grey in the diffuse early light — while the surrounding hillsides glow with that particular saturated green that follows overnight rain. The composition pulls the eye upward from the tree line, along the ascending steps, and finally to the calm, composed face looking out over the valley.

The history & when to go

Completed in 1993, the Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau Island is one of the largest outdoor seated Buddha statues in the world. It sits atop a three-platform altar on Ngong Ping plateau and is closely associated with the neighboring Po Lin Monastery, a working Buddhist community established in the early twentieth century. The statue faces north, and draws visitors and worshippers from across Hong Kong and beyond.

The view is at its most atmospheric in the early morning, when low cloud frequently drifts through the valleys and the light is soft before the midday haze sets in.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Hong Kong finds a home on your wall.
