About the view

Jugol Old Walled City Alley

The view pulls you straight into the heart of Jugol, looking down a narrow cobbled alley where warm tawny stones catch the soft, diffused light of midday. Tall walls press in on either side — one washed in pale mint and white, the other in a vivid, almost electric turquoise — channeling the eye toward a distant doorway framed in yellow and green. Small tufts of low growth push up between the stones underfoot, and at the center of it all, a solitary figure in a flowing periwinkle wrap moves away from us, unhurried, as if the alley belongs entirely to her. The palette is extraordinary: cool blue, saturated teal, sun-warmed ochre, all held together by the dappled golden light filtering through.

The history & when to go

Jugol, the old walled city of Harar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its outstanding historical and cultural significance. The walls enclosing the old city were constructed over several centuries and contain one of the highest densities of mosques of any city in the world. Harar is considered the fourth holiest city in Islam, and Jugol's tight network of alleys has remained largely intact for hundreds of years, continuing to function as a living urban community.

Early morning light gives these alleys a particularly gentle glow before the midday heat settles in, making it the most rewarding time to walk them in person.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Harar finds a home on your wall.
