About the view

Guanajuato Underground Tunnel Road

Deep beneath the streets of Guanajuato, a mint-green vintage car sits at the curve of an underground tunnel road, its round headlights glowing amber against warm stone walls that arch overhead in a barrel vault stretching back into the distance. The view is low and close, as though you are standing on the cobbled floor of the tunnel itself, the terracotta brickwork radiating golden heat from wall sconces mounted along the passage. To the right, a broad staircase climbs toward a distant doorway edged in yellow and orange light, and the whole scene is wrapped in deep burnt sienna and honey, with the car's seafoam color the single cool note in an otherwise ember-toned world.

The history & when to go

The tunnel network running beneath the city was originally the channeled bed of the Guanajuato River, built to redirect floodwaters away from the low-lying historic center. After a dam was completed upstream, the river channel was repurposed and gradually expanded into a road system that now forms the backbone of the city's traffic flow. What was once purely functional infrastructure became one of the most distinctive features of the city, threading drivers through vaulted passages that feel more like a cathedral crypt than a commuter route.

Late afternoon is a lovely time to experience the tunnels in person, when the contrast between the warm electric glow inside and the fading daylight at each entrance is at its most dramatic.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Guanajuato finds a home on your wall.
