Guanajuato Basilica de Nuestra Senora
A terracotta-toned path draws the eye straight toward the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato, its warm ochre facade and tiered bell towers rising confidently against an electric blue sky scattered with soft white clouds. The view stretches from ground level along the garden square, with vivid lawns and neatly clipped hedges fanning outward on either side, their deep greens a striking contrast to the golden and rust-red facades of the surrounding buildings. Marigold-yellow walls line the flanks of the composition, and a bronze figure stands quietly at the foot of the steps, anchoring the scene before the church's broad, welcoming front.
The history
The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato holds a special place in Mexican religious history. It is home to a polychrome figure of the Virgin that is widely considered one of the oldest Christian sculptures in the Americas, believed to have been a gift from King Charles I and his son Philip II of Spain to the city in the sixteenth century. The church itself was completed in the late seventeenth century and has stood as the spiritual and civic centerpiece of the city ever since, its feast days drawing devotees from across the region.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Guanajuato finds a home on your wall.
