About the view

Jet d'Eau Lake Geneva

The Jet d'Eau rises from the middle of Lake Geneva like a pillar of fire at this hour, caught head-on from the western shore as the sun drops behind the low rooflines of the city. Amber and copper flood the spray from below while the column itself glows against a softening sky of dusty lavender and pale gold. Where the water crashes back to the surface, it fans outward in a wide, luminous skirt that seems to rest on the lake like a crown. A small sailboat bobs quietly at a mooring in the foreground, and the last sunlight traces a long, broken path across the water straight toward the viewer. Rolling clouds catch the warmth overhead, and the distant hills fade to a gentle silhouette on either side.

The history & when to go

The Jet d'Eau is one of the tallest fountains in the world, shooting water roughly 140 meters into the air. It began in the late nineteenth century as a pressure-relief valve for a hydraulic power network, then moved to its current position in the lake and became a public landmark. Today it runs on a dedicated pump system and has long served as the defining symbol of Geneva, visible from far across the water and from the air as planes approach the city.

Sunset on a clear evening in late spring or early summer brings the best of this view, when the light stays warm and low for a long, unhurried hour.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Geneva finds a home on your wall.
