About the view

Navala Village Thatched Bures

A sweep of open grassland leads the eye toward Navala Village, where a cluster of traditional bure dwellings rise from the valley floor in warm golden tones. The foreground bure dominates the right of the scene, its broad conical roof catching the midday sun so that every woven strand glows amber and honey against brilliant green hills. Behind it, smaller rounded rooftops step back through the landscape in a gentle rhythm, their warm thatching echoing one another across the slope. Tall volcanic ridgelines serrate the horizon under a soft blue sky, and a few billowing clouds keep the light alive and shifting. Splashes of yellow flowers along a pale-walled exterior add just enough warmth to anchor the composition before the eye travels up and away into those emerald hills.

The history & when to go

Navala is one of the last villages in Fiji where the traditional bure — the rectangular, thatched dwelling long central to Fijian community life — remains the standard form of housing for its residents. The village operates under a chiefly system with deep roots in indigenous iTaukei culture, and its continued commitment to traditional architecture has made it a place of genuine cultural significance within Fiji.

The soft directional light captured in this scene is most true to life in the morning hours, when the sun angles low across the valley and the grasslands glow their most luminous green.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Fiji Islands finds a home on your wall.
