About the view

Levuka Old Town Church

A dark, battlemented clock tower anchors the left side of the scene, its warm stone face catching just enough morning sun to separate it from the vivid blue sky behind. Attached to the tower, the long nave stretches to the right, its white-boarded walls glowing and its deep-red roof cutting a clean, bold line across the composition. Gothic arch windows trim the sides in amber, and a sweep of closely cropped green lawn runs the full width of the foreground. Tall palms lean in from the upper right, their fronds framing the view, while across the water to the left, a dark headland and a distant peak complete the horizon. It is a scene of striking contrasts — dark tower, bright nave, red roof, tropical green — all held together under that wide Pacific sky that belongs unmistakably to Levuka.

The history & when to go

The church in Levuka Old Town stands as part of a streetscape that earned the town recognition as Fiji's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2013. Levuka served as the country's first colonial capital and the place where Fiji's Deed of Cession to Britain was signed in 1874. The town's buildings, including its churches, have been preserved largely as they were during the colonial period, making Levuka one of the most intact examples of a nineteenth-century Pacific port settlement anywhere in the region.

Late afternoon light catches the white walls and red roof at their warmest, with the lagoon calm and the hills still deeply green behind.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Fiji Islands finds a home on your wall.
