About the view

Mykines Lighthouse Hilltop

A slim white tower rises from a ridge of vivid green on Mykines, its red cap bright against a wash of open Atlantic sky. The view looks along the hilltop from low ground, so the lighthouse stands tall in the right of the frame, guy-wires fanning out like compass lines, a small red outbuilding tucked close beside it. The slope rolls forward in layered greens — lush, almost electric in clear northern light — and a burst of russet where warm-toned rock breaks through the turf. Beyond the ridge, a second headland recedes into blue-green water, the sea calm enough to mirror the sky, the whole scene balanced between the saturated earth below and the cool, cloud-softened horizon above.

The history & when to go

The Mykines lighthouse has guided vessels through some of the North Atlantic's most demanding waters since the early twentieth century. Mykines island itself is the westernmost in the Faroese archipelago, accessible only by boat or helicopter, and home to one of the region's most celebrated seabird colonies. The lighthouse sits at the far western end of the area, perched on a narrow headland that drops sharply to the sea on both sides, a position chosen precisely because of the hazards the surrounding waters pose to passing ships.

Midsummer brings the longest light and the brightest green to that ridge, with visibility stretching far out over the ocean on clear days.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Faroe Islands finds a home on your wall.
