About the view

Eze Exotic Garden Overlook

From the heights of the Eze Exotic Garden, the view opens like a held breath. Rounded golden globes and tall, spiky green forms crowd the foreground, their warm terracotta flowers catching the low sun in vivid orange and rust. Below them, warm stone rooftops of the medieval village step down the hillside in layered amber and sienna, and then — abruptly — the land surrenders to the Mediterranean. The sea fills the canvas in deep, saturated cobalt, interrupted only by a rounded headland thick with dark forest and, farther out, a low island dissolving into the haze. A single pale streak of cloud drifts across an otherwise open sky, tinged with the blush of early or late light.

The history & when to go

The Eze Exotic Garden occupies the site of a former fortress at the very summit of the village, and the views it commands have drawn visitors since the garden was established in the mid-twentieth century. The collection focuses on drought-tolerant plants from arid regions around the world, and the contrast between their sculptural forms and the vast blue expanse below is central to what makes the garden so memorable. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche famously walked the steep coastal path below Eze, and the surrounding landscape left a lasting impression on him.

The light is softest and most golden in the hours just after sunrise, when the sea below glows and the garden comes alive with long, warm shadows.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Eze finds a home on your wall.
