About the view

Copan Ruins Scarlet Macaws

A scarlet macaw perches on tumbled warm stone in the foreground, its plumage a vivid cascade of crimson, gold, and deep blue that seems almost lit from within. Two more of the birds move through the lush green grass behind it, while ancient stepped structures emerge from the shade of tall, broad-canopied trees in the middle distance. The light is the warm gold of a tropical afternoon, pooling on the grass and catching the pale stones scattered across the scene. The composition pulls the eye from the brilliant bird in close focus all the way back through layers of deep jungle green to the half-reclaimed terraces of Copán beyond.

The history & when to go

The ruins at Copán represent one of the most artistically sophisticated cities of the ancient Maya world. At its height, roughly between the fifth and ninth centuries, the city was a center of sculpture, astronomy, and hieroglyphic writing. The site's Hieroglyphic Stairway is the longest known Maya inscription, recording the history of the ruling dynasty across over 2,000 individual glyphs. Copán was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 and continues to be studied by archaeologists working to understand the full scope of its history.

The dry season, running roughly from November through April, brings clearer skies and the most reliable macaw sightings in the open plazas.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Copan Ruins finds a home on your wall.
