About the view

Copan Ruins Hieroglyphic Stairway

The view pulls you close — closer than most visitors dare to stand. A broad stairway rises in warm honey and amber tiers, its face carved with row upon row of glyphs that catch the afternoon light at a low, raking angle. Tall trees crowd the foreground, their roots splaying across the plaza floor, their canopy letting through soft columns of gold and pale green. One trunk leans boldly across the composition, its peeling, rust-colored bark a living counterpoint to the precise horizontal lines of the steps behind it. The palette is all burnished earth tones — ochre, sienna, dusty gold — with the jungle pushing in from every edge in loose washes of olive and sage. The light feels late and unhurried, the kind that turns warm stone the color of embers.

The history & when to go

The Hieroglyphic Stairway at Copan is the longest known Maya hieroglyphic text ever discovered. It climbs the face of a temple in the site's main acropolis and is covered in more than 2,200 individual glyphs recording the dynastic history of Copan's rulers. The stairway is associated with the reign of the ruler known to scholars as Smoke Shell, who commissioned it in the eighth century. It remains a central focus of ongoing research and conservation, and is considered among the most significant inscriptions in the entire Maya world.

Early morning, before the light turns harsh, is when the carvings cast the sharpest shadows and the surrounding forest is still cool and alive with sound.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Copan Ruins finds a home on your wall.
