About the view

Cape Point Lighthouse Rocky Peak

A white lighthouse dome crowns the jagged peak of Cape Point, perched so high above the surrounding ocean that it seems almost accidental — as though the rock simply grew tall enough to meet the sky. The view looks up along the spine of the headland, warm golden light raking across the face of the cliff and turning every fold of rock to amber and rust. Low coastal scrub catches that same glow at the foreground, flashes of yellow-green among the boulders, while deep blue water stretches to the horizon on both sides of the ridge. To the left, a secondary headland falls away into the sea, hazy in the early or late light. The sky shifts from pale peach near the waterline up through soft lavender to a clear, open blue overhead.

The history & when to go

Cape Point has guided and haunted mariners for centuries. The lighthouse completed in 1919 was built to replace an earlier light that sat so high it was frequently lost in cloud and mist. The point itself forms part of the Table Mountain National Park, a protected reserve that covers much of the Cape Peninsula and safeguards one of the most botanically diverse regions on Earth. The dramatic meeting of ocean and cliff here made it one of the most significant navigational landmarks on historic trade routes between Europe and Asia.

The golden warmth captured in this scene is truest in the hour before sunset, when the cliffs glow their richest and the ocean deepens to indigo.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cape Town finds a home on your wall.
