About the view

Camps Bay Beach Twelve Apostles

The view sweeps along Camps Bay Beach from a low southern vantage point, looking northwest toward the open Atlantic as the last of the day's light burns across the scene. The Twelve Apostles fill the right side of the composition, their serrated ridgeline glowing deep copper and rust against a sky that melts from burnt orange at the horizon up through rose and soft lavender. To the left, a lone conical peak catches the same warm fire before dissolving into purple shadow over the water. The beach curves in a long pale arc, its sand flushed pink by the setting sun, while rolling surf breaks in loose white layers, the shallow water shifting between teal and deep blue-grey. Tall, slender shapes of trees line the shore beneath the cliffs, dark silhouettes grounding the warmth above.

The history & when to go

Table Mountain's series of buttress peaks, collectively known as the Twelve Apostles, form the western face of the Table Mountain massif in Cape Town. The range runs roughly north to south along the Atlantic seaboard and is part of the Table Mountain National Park, a protected area that also forms part of the Cape Floristic Region, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its extraordinary concentration of plant diversity.

Sunset draws the richest color from these cliffs, and the hour just before dusk, when the peaks shift from gold to deep red, is when this particular view is at its most vivid.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cape Town finds a home on your wall.
