About the view

Byblos Old Souk Archway

The view draws you straight down a narrow passage in Byblos's Old Souk, the eye pulled forward by a perfectly centered pointed arch draped in cascading blooms of deep magenta. Warm stone buildings rise on either side, their facades lit by ornate iron lanterns that cast pools of amber and gold against the early-evening air. The paved lane below is inlaid with alternating bands of pale tile and dark gravel, creating a rhythm that marches toward the arch and the soft blue dusk beyond it. Potted plants anchor the foreground corners, their dark green leaves a grounding counterpoint to all that warmth. The palette moves from deep ochre and copper in the foreground to a cool, luminous sky at the center — intimate on the edges, open at the heart.

The history & when to go

The Old Souk of Byblos sits within one of the most ancient inhabited urban cores in the world, a district that has served as a place of trade and daily life for millennia. The souk quarter as it exists today reflects layers of Phoenician, Hellenistic, Roman, Crusader, and Ottoman presence, each era leaving its mark on the architecture and street plan. The characteristic pointed arches are associated with the medieval period of the city's long history, when Byblos was an active Crusader port.

The passage glows most beautifully in the hour before sunset, when lantern light and fading daylight meet and the flowering vines are at their most vivid.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Byblos finds a home on your wall.
