About the view

Byblos Ancient Harbor Ruins

A lone wooden boat — red-trimmed, white-hulled — floats on water that shifts from deep teal to liquid gold as the sun drops behind the ancient harbor ruins of Byblos. The view is taken from the rocky shoreline at the water's edge, looking westward across the sheltered inlet toward the Mediterranean. The sun sits low and enormous, a burning disc of amber and white that halos the ruined warm-stone tower beside it, casting long copper light across every surface — the still water, the scatter of moored boats along the quay, the tumbled foreground rocks. In the upper left, a branch heavy with vivid scarlet blossoms dips into the frame, its red echoing the stripe along the nearest boat's hull. The sky above melts through peach and pale lavender before deepening toward dusk.

The history & when to go

The harbor ruins visible here are part of the broader ancient port complex that made Byblos one of the great trading centers of the ancient world. The city's harbor served Phoenician merchants who shipped cedar to Egypt for thousands of years, and the site later came under the influence of successive powers — Egyptian, Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Crusader. That long accumulation of occupation and rebuilding left each era's mark on the same stretch of coastline.

The last hour before sunset is the finest time to stand at this harbor in person, when the light turns the water gold and the old stones seem to glow from within.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Byblos finds a home on your wall.
