About the view

Buenos Aires Neoclassical Cathedral

A low sun breaks through at the left edge of the scene, sending a long gold flare across a wet stone path that leads the eye straight toward the cathedral's pale facade. The view is taken from ground level, close enough that a massive old tree fills the right side of the canvas, its gnarled roots spreading into vivid green lawn. Behind it, the white neoclassical building rises with a tall bell tower on the left and a blue-tinted dome at center, both caught between a burst of warm light and a deep bruise-colored storm sky building overhead. The contrast is electric — cream walls glowing against churning indigo cloud, the wet paving stones throwing back flickers of gold.

The history & when to go

Metropolitan Cathedral Buenos Aires stands on the northern edge of the Plaza de Mayo, the symbolic heart of the Argentine capital. The site has held a place of Catholic worship since the sixteenth century, though the building seen today reflects centuries of construction and rebuilding, reaching something close to its current neoclassical form by the early nineteenth century. The cathedral holds the mausoleum of General José de San Martín, the liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, making it one of the most historically significant interiors in South America. It has been the setting for major national ceremonies throughout Argentina's history.

Late afternoon in spring or early autumn gives the best chance of catching that dramatic interplay of low sun and storm light that defines this view.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Buenos Aires finds a home on your wall.
