About the view

Tiger's Nest Monastery Cliffside

The view looks almost impossible — a cluster of white-walled temples and deep crimson rooflines pressed directly into the face of a sheer cliff, as though the mountain itself agreed to hold them there. Tiger's Nest Monastery rises above the Paro Valley in tiered layers, its golden roof ornaments catching a cool, diffused light against the grey mass of rock behind. Tall, dark evergreens crowd the ledges below, their deep green a vivid contrast to the bright white walls and the arc of multicolored prayer flags that sweep across the upper left of the composition. Wisps of mist soften the distant peaks, lending the whole scene a luminous, suspended quality — caught somewhere between earth and sky.

The history & when to go

Paro Taktsang, as the monastery is known locally, is one of the most venerated Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Bhutan. According to tradition, the site is sacred to Guru Rinpoche, the eighth-century master credited with introducing Buddhism to Bhutan, who is said to have meditated in a cave there. The complex that stands today was largely built in the seventeenth century and has been carefully restored following a fire in 1998. It clings to a cliff face roughly nine hundred meters above the valley floor, and the steep trail to reach it has drawn pilgrims and travelers for generations.

Early morning light, when mist still fills the valley and the white walls glow against the dark cliff, is widely regarded as the finest time to experience this view in person.
