About the view

Wat Pho Chedis Bangkok

Two monks in deep saffron robes walk side by side along a terracotta-paved courtyard, their figures small against a forest of towering chedis that rise on every side. The view is taken from ground level, looking straight down the passage between the tiled spires, so the eye travels with the monks toward a soft blue sky streaked with pale cloud. The chedis themselves are encrusted with bands of green and gold ceramic detail, their tiered bases catching warm afternoon light that pools across the rosy paving. Leafy canopy pushes into the upper right of the scene, adding a breath of cool green to an otherwise golden and terracotta palette. The composition pulls the gaze gently forward, unhurried, as if you too are walking through Wat Pho on a quiet Bangkok afternoon.

The history & when to go

Wat Pho is one of the oldest and largest temple complexes in Bangkok, with origins believed to predate the founding of Bangkok as the capital in 1782. It was significantly expanded and restored under King Rama I and later King Rama III, who transformed it into a center of public education and traditional medicine. The complex is home to the celebrated Reclining Buddha, one of the largest such figures in the country, and has long been recognized as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage as a formal discipline.

Early morning, before the midday heat settles in, is when the courtyards are at their most serene and the light falls at its most flattering angle across the chedis.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bangkok finds a home on your wall.
