About the view

Wat Arun Chao Phraya River

The view opens from the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, looking west toward Wat Arun as the sun melts into the horizon directly behind the temple's central tower. The sky is a deep wash of coral, magenta and gold, with streaks of violet cloud fanning outward from the burning disc of the sun. The tower and its four smaller companions glow amber against that blazing backdrop, their tiered silhouettes rising in sharp, layered points above the dark line of trees along the bank. The river mirrors every shade — orange and pink ribboning across the water's surface — while a single low wooden boat drifts quietly in the foreground, its dark hull grounding the composition in something human and unhurried.

The history & when to go

Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, stands on the west bank of the Chao Phraya in Bangkok and is one of Thailand's most recognized landmarks. Its central tower rises to a height of about 82 meters and is decorated with fragments of colorful Chinese porcelain, giving the surface an intricate texture that catches light differently at every hour. The temple's origins trace back to the Ayutthaya period, and it served as a royal chapel during the Thonburi period, housing the revered Emerald Buddha for a time before that image was moved across the river. The site remains an active place of Buddhist worship today.

Sunset from the opposite bank draws the full drama of Wat Arun's western silhouette, and the light peaks in the dry season months between November and February.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bangkok finds a home on your wall.
