About the view

Bali Tropical Beach Sunset

The view opens at the waterline, looking west along a sweeping curve of shoreline somewhere on Bali's coast. To the left, a dark headland rises from the sand, and a cluster of tall palms leans out over the water, their fronds cut as sharp silhouettes against a sky that has caught fire. The sun sits just above the horizon, a perfect molten disc pouring a column of amber and gold straight across the surface of the sea. Above it, clouds streak outward in bands of burnt orange, deep coral and rose, the whole sky appearing to radiate heat. Where the gentle waves curl onto the sand, the wet shore mirrors back every shade of that blaze, so that the beach itself seems lit from within.

The history & when to go

Bali has drawn travelers for centuries, and its southwestern coastline became internationally celebrated across the twentieth century as one of the world's great sunset destinations. The island sits just south of the equator, which gives its sunsets a near-vertical drop and an intensity of color that photographers and visitors return for year after year. The surrounding seas and the island's volcanic peaks together shape the atmosphere in ways that deepen the hues at dusk, making each evening feel distinct.

For the most vivid version of this view in person, the dry season between May and October offers the clearest skies and the most reliably spectacular light as the sun goes down.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bali finds a home on your wall.
