About the view

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple

Seen from the lake's edge, with vivid blooms of deep pink and amber filling the foreground, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan rises in silhouette against one of Bali's most breathtaking dawns. The tiered pagoda towers stack upward in dark, precise layers, their reflections stretching long and still across the glassy water below. To the left, soft violet mountain mist dissolves into the distance. To the right, the sky ignites — coral bleeding into rose, rose into pale gold — and the whole surface of the lake catches that fire, turning the water into a mirror of the heavens.

The history & when to go

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is a lakeside temple complex on the shores of Lake Bratan in Bali's central highlands, dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes, and rivers. Built in the seventeenth century, it has long been one of the most important water temples on the island, serving as a spiritual center for the subak irrigation system that sustains Bali's rice farming communities. That system, rooted in cooperative water management guided by ritual and temple life, is recognized by UNESCO as part of Bali's cultural landscape.

The first light of morning, when mist still clings to the surrounding peaks and the lake lies perfectly calm, is when this scene comes alive most fully.
