About the view

Lycabettus Hill Athens Skyline

Lycabettus Hill rises from the heart of Athens in a broad, rocky cone, its upper slopes dense with dark green trees giving way to bare warm stone near the summit, where a small white structure catches the last of the evening light. The view here is taken from another elevated point across the city, looking northeast across a sea of flat-roofed white buildings that glow amber and cream in the golden hour. The sky above fades from soft peach at the horizon through blush pink to pale ivory, and the rounded silhouette of a larger hill rolls across the background in muted violet shadow. Dry grasses in the foreground burn a deep copper, anchoring the composition before the eye lifts across Athens and settles on the hill's distinct peak.

The history & when to go

At 277 metres above sea level, Lycabettus Hill is the highest point in Athens and has been a landmark of the city since antiquity. A small chapel dedicated to Saint George stands at its summit and has long been a destination for both residents and visitors. The hill and its surrounding area became a public park, and a funicular railway has carried visitors to the top for decades. The panoramic view from the summit takes in the full spread of the city, the Acropolis, and on clear days the waters of the Saronic Gulf.

Late afternoon in spring or autumn rewards visitors with the warmest light and the clearest skies, making the walk or ride to the top especially worth the effort.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Athens finds a home on your wall.
