About the view

Acropolis of Athens Greece

From a low meadow vantage point, the Acropolis of Athens rises above pale rocky outcrops and a sweeping retaining wall, the Parthenon crowning the hill against a soft periwinkle sky. Red wildflowers push up through tall golden grass in the foreground, and the dark silhouette of a tree branch frames the upper left corner like a natural border. At the base of the hill, the arched tiers of an ancient open-air theater curve through the middle distance, warm and cream-colored in the afternoon light. The whole composition moves your eye upward from bloom to ruin to temple, bathed in the honeyed glow of a Greek afternoon.

The history & when to go

The Acropolis has served as the symbolic and religious heart of Athens since antiquity. The Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena, was completed around 432 BCE under the leadership of the statesman Pericles, with the sculptor Pheidias overseeing its celebrated decorative program. The complex also includes the Erechtheion, the Propylaea gateway, and the Temple of Athena Nike. Over the centuries the site functioned as a treasury, a church, and a mosque before becoming one of the most studied and visited ancient monuments in the world.

Late spring is a particularly rewarding time to visit in person, when wildflowers still color the hillsides and the light holds its golden quality well into the evening hours.
