About the view

Santa Catalina Monastery Cloisters

A blazing terracotta wall fills the left side of the scene, its warm orange deepened by strong midday sun and cut through with the shadow of a wrought-iron lamp bracket. Across a narrow paved courtyard, an electric cobalt-blue wall glows almost impossibly vivid against the bright Andean sky just visible above. Between them, a vaulted arcade recedes into cool darkness, its rounded arches stepping back in a rhythm that draws the eye inward. Terracotta pots of pink and red flowers dot the base of the blue wall, and leafy potted plants spill outward near the archway's threshold. The composition is bold and flat-planed, the colors so saturated they vibrate against one another — a view of the Santa Catalina Monastery cloisters in Arequipa that feels less like looking at a building and more like stepping inside a flame.

The history & when to go

Santa Catalina Monastery was founded in 1579 and for nearly four centuries functioned as a fully enclosed convent, its nuns living in almost complete isolation from the outside world. The complex covers around two hectares in the heart of the city and opened to the public in 1970, revealing an entire interior neighborhood of interconnected streets, plazas, kitchens, and chapels. Its walls have been kept in the vivid pigments — deep ochre, terracotta, and the famous indigo blue — that generations of residents used to define their individual quarters.

The light is sharpest and the colors most electric in the late morning, when the high-altitude sun strikes the courtyard walls at full strength.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Arequipa finds a home on your wall.
