About the view

Tanque La Union Antigua

Tanque La Union stretches long and still across the scene, its calm surface turning the row of warm-stone arches along the left into a perfect mirror image below. The view is taken from close to the water's edge, looking down the full length of the basin toward a volcano rising in soft lavender and grey on the horizon. Tall palms catch the last copper light of late afternoon, their reflections rippling gently into the teal and rose of the water. Low colonial buildings in terracotta and deep red line the far bank, and a pale, peach-washed sky stretches overhead, pulling every color — amber, ochre, green, blush — down into the still surface of Antigua's most quietly beautiful public space.

The history & when to go

Tanque La Union is a communal washing basin that has served the neighborhood for over a century. Built in 1853, it was designed as a functional gathering place where residents could wash clothes and collect water. The long arcade of arches along its edge is one of the most recognizable neoclassical structures in the city, and the whole site has been carefully maintained as both a working landmark and a symbol of Antigua's layered heritage.

Early morning and late afternoon bring the most dramatic light to the tanque, when the volcano appears sharpest against a glowing sky and the still water holds the scene in near-perfect reflection.

Daily Stillness of Antigua's Dawn – Tanque La Union Antigua Antigua · Gallery Canvas

Golden colonial arches stretch beside a still reflecting pool in Antigua, their warm ochre stone doubled in the glassy water as a volcano rises in the soft dawn haze. This watercolor study of Tanque La Union in Antigua renders that mirror-calm scene in amber, rose, and cool blue twilight.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Antigua finds a home on your wall.
