About the view

Merced Church Antigua Guatemala

The view faces La Merced Church head-on from the open plaza in front of it, catching the facade in full morning light. Antigua glows in this moment — the church's ornate front rises in rich amber and warm gold, its layered arches and carved relief work catching the sun so intensely that the whole surface seems to radiate rather than simply reflect. Twin bell towers frame the central composition, and a dark cross stands in the foreground of the atrium, grounding the luminous facade with a single vertical weight. Broad-canopied trees in deep green lean in from either side, their foliage softening the edges of the scene. Above, a vivid cobalt sky holds loose white clouds, and the long shadows stretching across the wide plaza below tell you the hour is still early.

The history & when to go

La Merced is one of the finest examples of Spanish colonial Baroque architecture in the Americas. Construction of the current church was completed in the eighteenth century, following earlier structures on the same site that were damaged by earthquakes — a recurring chapter in Antigua's history. The facade's intricate decorative relief, rendered in that signature warm yellow, has made it one of the most recognized religious buildings in Central America. The church remains an active place of worship and is particularly central to the elaborate Semana Santa processions for which Antigua is internationally known.

The golden light that defines this view is truest when the plaza is at its most tranquil.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Antigua finds a home on your wall.
