About the view

Virgin River Canyon Narrows

Towering walls of blazing amber and deep coral rise on either side of the Virgin River Canyon Narrows, their sheer vertical faces catching light in a way that shifts the color from fiery orange on the left to cooler rose and plum on the right. The view looks straight into the heart of the canyon from river level, the narrow strip of open sky above a soft pewter-blue, streaked with cloud. Between the warm stone walls, a dense canopy of vivid green trees and low riverside growth presses close to the water's edge, their brightness made more intense by contrast with the towering rock. The river itself runs through the center in a calm ribbon of cool blue-grey, its surface hinting at shallow stones beneath.

The history & when to go

The Narrows is the narrowest section of Zion Canyon and one of the most celebrated slot canyon hikes in the United States. Carved over millions of years by the Virgin River cutting through the Colorado Plateau, the canyon walls in places stand over a thousand feet high while closing to a width of as little as twenty feet. The route through the Narrows requires hikers to wade directly in the river for much of its length, making it one of the few trails where the water is the path itself. Zion National Park was established in 1919, making it Utah's oldest national park.
