About the view

Yerevan Cascade Stairway

The view sweeps down the Yerevan Cascade from above, catching the great stepped terraces in the full warmth of late-afternoon light. Row after row of broad staircases descend in pale honey and amber tiers, each level punctuated by deep-set arches that hold cool pools of shadow. Dense trees push up between the levels in bursts of deep green, softening the geometry and giving the composition a layered, almost rhythmic quality. A glimmer of water catches the light at the base, while the city spreads across the upper distance in soft ochres and dusty rose, fading toward a hazy horizon.

The history

The Cascade is a monumental stairway complex in Yerevan that connects the city center to the hills above. Construction began in the 1970s but was halted and only completed in stages, with the Cafesjian Center for the Arts inside opening in 2009. The complex links a series of terraced gardens and fountains across its considerable height and has become one of the city's most recognized public spaces, closely associated with the arts through the Cafesjian Center for the Arts housed within it.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Yerevan finds a home on your wall.
