About the view

Victoria Falls Rainbow Gorge

The view pulls you out over the gorge from high above, the full curtain of Victoria Falls stretching across the canvas in a broad, churning arc. Seen from an aerial vantage, the river slides in calm blue-grey sheets across the upper frame before fracturing into white ribbons that plunge into the void below. Dense canopy crowds the far cliff edge in layered greens and warm amber, and where the mist rises from the gorge floor, a vivid rainbow curves sharply downward into the trees — its arc of red, orange and gold catching afternoon light against the pale, luminous sky. The composition draws the eye from the wide, quiet river at the top all the way down into the churning drop, giving the scene an almost vertiginous sense of scale.

The history & when to go

Victoria Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the world, measured by the combined width and height of its curtain. The Zambezi River drops over a basalt plateau along the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, forming a series of falls that stretch roughly 1,700 metres across. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the falls have drawn international attention since the mid-nineteenth century when Scottish explorer David Livingstone reached them and brought them to wider notice.

The rainbow that arches through this scene is most vivid during the high-water months between March and May, when the Zambezi runs full and the spray reaches its greatest height.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Victoria Falls finds a home on your wall.
