About the view

Vancouver Skyline Stanley Park

A dense foreground of tall, dark conifers fills the lower third of the canvas, their deep greens broken by a ribbon of still water glinting beyond the tree line. Rising above that green wall, the Vancouver skyline clusters in tiers of glass and warm-toned towers, catching the full light of a clear midday sun. Behind the city, the North Shore mountains surge upward in long diagonal sweeps of blue-grey and forest shadow, their snow-dusted peaks dissolving into a vivid cobalt sky. The view is layered and almost theatrical — wilderness, city, and mountain stacked one behind the other as if the whole scene were staged.

The history & when to go

Stanley Park has been at the edge of Vancouver's downtown since 1888, when the city set aside more than a thousand acres of forested land on a peninsula in Burrard Inlet. It remains one of the largest urban parks in North America, and the viewpoint it offers toward the city is one of the most recognized in Canada. The park's great trees predate the city itself by centuries, giving the skyline views from within it a particular tension — the very old and the very new sharing the same sightline.

Clear autumn days bring the sharpest contrast between the golden canopy, the blue water of the inlet, and the first snow catching the light on the peaks above the city.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Vancouver finds a home on your wall.
