About the view

Valle de Cocora Wax Palms

A lone horse grazes in the broad, sunlit floor of Valle de Cocora, its chestnut-and-white coat catching the midday light against a sweep of luminous yellow-green grass. The view opens wide from ground level, with rolling meadow hills rippling gently toward a cluster of impossibly tall, slender palms that rise like green-tipped needles into a bright, cloud-piled sky. Behind them, deeply shadowed ridges fold one behind another in soft layers of teal and indigo, their forested slopes dissolving into haze at the upper edges. The composition pulls the eye upward again and again — from the quiet intimacy of that grazing horse, along the vertical procession of tall palms, and finally into the billowing white clouds above. The colors are saturated but unhurried: acid green in the near grass, cool violet in the distant mountains, and a sky that shifts from pale blue to brilliant white at its center.

The history & when to go

The wax palm has been Colombia's national tree since 1985, a recognition of both its extraordinary height and its cultural significance to the Andean communities of the Quindío region. The palms that tower over Cocora's meadows are among the tallest in the world, and the valley they inhabit is protected within Los Nevados National Natural Park, ensuring the landscape remains largely intact.

The valley is most dramatically lit in the morning hours, when low-angle sun floods the meadows and mountain mist still clings to the upper ridges.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Valle de Cocora finds a home on your wall.
